This is a rich and flavorful tomato sauce. It goes great as a pasta sauce, pizza sauce, a base for meatballs or even on top of a bruschetta. Also, it won’t have you using a box grater with fresh tomatoes while you tear off the skin from the tops of your knuckles. It’s simple to make, has a limited number of ingredients and can be made from start to finish in 20 minutes! It’s also a great imposter of a day-long laborious tomato sauce and will fool your guests into thinking you spent the day over a stove impersonating Francesca from Bologna.
One of my go-to tomato sauces is an incredibly simple cherry tomato Pomodoro, however this one is a bit thicker and I like to use it when I need the consistency to hold up, such as the case in my Turkish Manti dumpling dish as seen below.
Za’atar and Garlic Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 14 oz cans diced tomatoes in their juices
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp olive oil extra virgin
- 2 tsp za'atar
- 4 tbsp chopped basil fresh basil
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
Instructions
- Combine ingredients in medium sauce pot; stir and bring to a boil, then lower heat to low-medium and simmer uncovered for 20minutes. Stir occasionally.
